Early Signs of Glaucoma

A recent CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) report indicates that at least 3 million Americans have glaucoma. This vision complication is the top cause of blindness for people above the age of 60. You can avoid blindness from glaucoma through early treatment. Regularly visiting an experienced optometrist for eye checkups can enable early detection and treatment of glaucoma. At TRIO Eyecare in Baton Rouge, we offer unrivaled eye care services, including glaucoma check-ups and treatment.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma refers to damage to the optic nerve often caused by increased intraocular pressure. The optic nerve carries image signals from the eye to the brain for interpretation. The optic nerve comprises over a million nerve fibers. These nerve fibers will die as glaucoma progresses, and you will start noticing blind spots in your vision. When the entire optic nerve is damaged, it is unable to perform its role, leading to blindness.

In a healthy eye, the same amount of aqueous humor the eye produces drains out through the drainage angle, maintaining intraocular balance. The increase in intraocular pressure usually results from more aqueous humor being produced than what can drain out.

Glaucoma Signs and Risk Factors

Signs that you might have glaucoma include:

  • Blurred or decreased vision
  • Eye redness
  • Severe eye or forehead pain
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Headache

You are at greater risk of developing glaucoma if:

  • Some members of your family have the condition
  • Are over 40 years old
  • Are nearsighted or farsighted
  • Use steroid medication for extended periods
  • Have a thinner than usual optic nerve
  • Your corneas are narrower than expected at the center

How Can an Optometrist Help?

The eye doctor can prescribe medication to reduce intraocular pressure, cut the production of aqueous fluid, or increase the drainage of aqueous fluid through the drainage angle. They can also recommend laser surgery or conventional eye surgery.
