Does Nearsightedness or Farsightedness Improve with Age?

Have you ever wondered whether you will have to wear glasses or contacts to correct the blurry vision caused by nearsightedness or farsightedness forever? Dr. Amin at TRIO Eyecare, your eye doctor in Baton Rouge, LA, has the answers for your questions.

Nearsightedness Usually Does Not Improve on Its Own

Children who are diagnosed with nearsightedness, or myopia, tend to get a little worse every year until they enter into adulthood. At that point, their vision does not get any worse, but then it does not get any better, either.

The good news about nearsightedness is that there are things an optometrist can do to slow down or even reverse it. Ask Dr. Amin about the different ways to correct or treat myopia such as the Brilliant Futures Program, an FDA approved program to slow down the progression of myopia.

Farsightedness Sometimes Does Get Better

There is good news for children who have hyperopia, better known as farsightedness. As the child grows, the eyes can recover somewhat from farsightedness. This changes the way light focuses on the retina, in the back of the eye, so objects up close aren't quite so blurry.

If you are older, however, is it possible that your farsightedness is caused by presbyopia. Your eyesight will likely only get worse if this is the case.

Tunnel Vision or Missing Vision is not okay

Tunnel vision can result from changes in the rods in the retina. It can also be causes by a condition called glaucoma, as well as other dangerous health conditions. Regular eye exams with including measurement of your intraocular pressure, make it possible to detect and treatment this potentially sight-robbing disease in time. Another sight threatening condition is Age Related Macular Degeneration which involves gradual loss of central vision. Both conditions if diagnosed, should be monitored one to two times a year.
